We decided for a total number of eight SCHWIND AMARIS lasers as this system provides best patient results at a reasonable price. By May 2010, more than 75.000 patient eyes have been treated with the laser. The trend continues to rise. Currently an average of 10,000 AMARIS treatments are being performed each month.

Within our own treatment portfolio, we have positioned the SCHWIND AMARIS in the premium segment.  It primarily targets at potential candidates for laser treatment who are willing to pay a slightly higher price for achieving better results. By now, more than 65 percent of the patients are selecting the treatment with the TotalTech Laser. The advantages are easily explained to the patient.  The main benefit of the SCHWIND AMARIS as compared to other systems is the very efficient 6D eye tracking.

Jorge Alió, MD, Vissum Medical Ophthalmologic Corporation, Alicante, Spain

Vissum was the first in Spain and worldwide the fourth provider of eye laser operations to acquire the SCHWIND AMARIS. I have been using the laser already in all types of refractive errors including corneal wavefront guided correction of irregular corneas. The SCHWIND AMARIS is the best of all lasers I have used, as it is faster and it seems to be more reliable in terms of centration and tracking. It is very effective in the final transition areas. It has a unique control on pupil size and very good ergonomics. The thermal control technology and control of the ablation with two fluence levels plays a very important role, especially among biological aspects: The less biological interaction there is with corneal tissue, the more reliable is healing of the wound. Thus, the treatment is more precise and less invasive in regard to possible tissue trauma. Probably this is why patients see so well the day after surgery. Thanks to the high speed and adjusted use of energy we have less tissue ablation and so the correction is minimally invasive concerning the tissue removed per diopter.

We have more precision at all levels, better outcomes and better technology to correct our refractive errors with the SCHWIND AMARIS. We are expanding the limits of our refractive corneal correction thanks to optimized ablation profiles that are better adapted to human sight and preserve more tissue. www.vissum.com

I was recently able to perform 550 consecutive cases with the  SCHWIND AMARIS: It is a super fast excimer laser with a 0.54 mm Super-Gaussian profile at a true 500 Hz repetition rate and automatic fluence adjustment. On the same system I have the possibility to perform “Aberration-Free” treatments, ocular wavefront treatments, corneal wavefront treatments and pachymetry-assisted lamellar corneal surgeries.

All controls are well placed and easy to reach and manipulate. The laser arm can be swiveled 90°, giving space for the patient and for other instruments in the operating room. There are built-in features that make this machine very smart and user friendly, with software that guides you step by step. There is a high resolution stereoscopic microscope, slit focusing illumination, integrated online pachymetry (OCP) and a slit lamp. The knowledge, the experience and the results obtained previously with the SCHWIND-CAM software are used and built into the SCHWIND AMARIS profiles. This means minimal need for nomograms and no surprises with the results. My results with the SCHWIND AMARIS are amazing so far! Previously, our re-treatment rate was 2%. With the new system, we can already see with the early results, that it is far lower. http://www.muscateye.com

SCHWIND AMARIS opens up a new dimension in safety and quality and fulfills highest expectations both in patient care and clinical demands – redefining, what state of the art in contemporary refractive surgery is. You work with a 500 Hz repetition rate and a 1050 Hz Eyetracker, which is the absolute theoretical and safe match regarding a state of the art machine. This makes this system not only safe but as well significantly shortens treatment time precluding most potential problems – especially in high ametropias where every single detail plays a major role for the final outcome.

Due to the laser beam profile a very smooth ablation is achieved, which leads to a very quick healing in surface treatments. The system has taken care of tracking and cyclotorsion problems and it moved all safety features to a higher quality stage. The SCHWIND AMARIS addresses the needs of high-volume surgeons and of medium-volume surgeons as well: It optimizes the workflow and it’s easy to follow - you are guided through the process and therefore also not very experienced surgeons will find it easy to use. SCHWIND AMARIS, apart from being an excellent primary treatment platform and due to its unique characteristics in combination with the highly precise corneal wavefront analysis, is also an invaluable retreatment tool. http://www.emmetropia.gr/

My principal criteria for selecting a laser system are software, hardware, and maintenance.  As of maintainance, no system is free of failures but with the SCHWIND AMARIS integral maintainance is performed promptly and in a preventive approach.  The SCHWIND AMARIS is very reliable in the refractive results that you expect to obtain.  We observed some undercorrections in the astigmatism, and  we are now increasing the astigmatism plan by 10% of the defect, in cases with more than 3.00 D of astigmatism. The speed limits the requirements for the patient's fixation and decreases exposure time. It has the dual fluence approach that has made a great contribution in improving performance levels by increasing ablation speed. It also allows for the possibility of including the excimer laser as an instrument to perform anterior segment procedures like lamellar grafts. The software gives the surgeon the possibility to face the patient with a very good armamentarium by using three different profiles: aberration-free, corneal wavefront and ocular wavefront, providing all of them consistent results and reliable outcomes. http://www.barraquer.com.co/

Massimo Camellin, MD, Sekal Clinic, Rovigo, Italy

I always perform surface ablation, Lasek and Epi-Lasek, and it is well known how surface ablation needs a smooth surface. The dual fluence and the intelligent thermal effect control of the SCHWIND AMARIS lead to heating control and a more even surface. These points determine fast visual recovery and stability for reducing every apoptosis phenomenons. The ergonomics of the instrument can be appreciated just from the first operation; microscope, working distance and eye tracker are the most impressive improvements detected. When the footswitch lets the laser start, the speed is achieved and also long treatments are performed in a few tens of seconds. This aspect is not only comfortable for the surgeon and the patient, but reduces the risk of changes in stromal hydration and is another fact in improving precision.

I am used to performing Topo-aberrometrical links following transplants, radial keratotomies, corneal scars and other irregular corneas. This eye tracker permits a perfect alignment between topography and eye, matching the two images. Thus, high order aberrations can be really reduced, almost disappearing. http://www.lasek.it/

Cesar Carriazo, MD, Centro Oftalmológico Carriazo, Barranquilla, Colombia

The SCHWIND AMARIS is the most versatile and complete system of all available eye lasers on the market. It comes with the best technical platform and high flexibility – such as through the use of Corneal Wavefront, Ocular Wavefront, Pachymetry-Assisted Laser Keratoplasty or Online Pachymetry. The innovative particle aspiration optimizes the precision of the ablation and therewith ensures better postoperative treatment results. The combination of speed and an extremely safe eyetracker, as well as the illumination and the optimal working distance ensure that the entire treatment process proceeds under consistent conditions. The technically functional, unique diversity is one argument for the AMARIS, another is that it consistently delivers excellent results and therewith calming certainty that everything is under control. In this respect I am in favour of saying that the AMARIS sets the standards as „the new wonder in the world of refractive surgery“. http://www.carriazo.com/

Alena Feuermannova, MD, Charles University, Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic

My general impression: The SCHWIND AMARIS is an excellent all-rounder as well as comfortable for both doctor and patient. I am very content with the speed of ablation, because sometimes the patients are not able to fixate on the light for a long time. The results are more than satisfactory so far. One day after surgery, all my LASIK patients attained a best corrected visual acuity of 20/20 and 20/16. In the majority of the patients the uncorrected visual acuity was the same. It was also seen that the laser facilitates extremely smooth treatment surfaces, which might contribute to a better postoperative healing process. The SCHWIND AMARIS is very user-friendly and optimizes the refractive surgeon’s workflow. In conclusion, the fact that I treated my own son with the SCHWIND AMARIS, seems to be the most convincing proof that I completely trust in the all-encompassing capabilities of this new laser generation. http://www.lfhk.cuni.cz/

Virgilio Galvis, MD, Centro Oftalmológico Virgilio Galvis, Bucaramanga, Colombia

The AMARIS is a remarkable, very high-resolution and very user-friendly laser. It is equipped with software that considers all individual needs in an optimal manner. Therewith the very broad spectrum of requirements of a refractive surgeon is perfectly served. As we refractive surgeons strive for highest perfection, a small adaptation of the nomogram can be helpful.

Furthermore, the laser distinguishes itself through high stability, performance strength and reliability. Technical service and Customer Support through the SCHWIND distributor Rocol functions exceptionally well. I am more than satisfied with AMARIS excimer laser. My professionalism and prestige have grown with it as the treatment results are 150 percent convincing. http://www.virgiliogalvis.com/

Stefanos Ikonomou, MD, Athenaeum Refractive Center, Athens, Greece

Athenaeum Refractive Center is the laser clinic with the most refractive procedures in Greece. Around 3000 laser operations a year are performed, approximately half of which are surface treatments (PRK/LASEK). Here the SCHWIND AMARIS laser ablation with two energy levels has proven to be an especially gentle treatment method. According to general comments from our PRK/LASEK patients, there is virtually no post-operative pain. In addition, the SCHWIND AMARIS is equipped with static and dynamic cyclotorsion control, which is not offered by any other competitor to the full extent. This is especially important in the correction of astigmatism, from which approximately 70% percent of our patients suffer. Already with a cylinder value of more than 1 D, the cyclotorsion control has significant influence on the results. Overall, the SCHWIND AMARIS as a laser system convinces through the sum of its properties. This is evidenced by the quality of the results – also with the consequence that we don’t require the use of nomograms. A further aspect is that the after sales services by Customer Support and Technical Service perfectly function.

Jin-Kuk Kim, MD, BS Eye Center, Seoul, Korea

With its minimum beam size and low energy accompanied by its Super-Gaussian beam profile, the SCHWIND AMARIS ensures very high ablation accuracy, resulting in exceptionally smooth treatment surfaces, thus providing fast recovery in visual acuity.

The dynamic eye tracker enables more precise cylindrical correction, thus providing a more customized environment to patients’ needs. Integrated online pachymetry helps to evaluate not only total thickness, but also the flap in LASIK surgery. With a more quiet excimer laser body, it is possible to provide patients with a more comfortable experience. http://www.bseye.com/

Michiel Luger, MD, VisionClinics, Utrecht, The Netherlands

The decision to employ two SCHWIND AMARIS lasers at VisionClinics Utrecht was based on several factors. We chose the laser because we strived for the highest quality available in the market. The results with the SCHWIND laser are the best I’ve ever seen and that’s what we aim for. It is a very high-tech type of surgery that we do so technology and quality go hand in hand. Without technology you can't deliver quality. The technological features of the SCHWIND AMARIS are impressing and, in my view, there is no comparable technological standard on the market. This is a very big plus to achieve this level of quality.

A further aspect is the stability and reliability of the laser system, as well as the predictability. That means that the very good results are also continuously achieved. Furthermore, the support functions in an exemplary way: What I like very much in my experience that we have with SCHWIND is that the interaction is on a very instant basis. As soon as there is an issue we are going to address we get a solution. All of these points play a critical role for the achievement of our high quality objectives. Hence, SCHWIND is in a sense part of our team. http://www.visionclinics.nl

Thomas Neuhann, MD, EuroEyes ALZ Eye Clinic Munich, Germany

The SCHWIND AMARIS fulfils in all areas a long list of desires and necessities evident for eye surgeons and meets current technology and treatment standards. These include, in particular, abilities that I have required for years – such as cyclotorsion control as part of 6D eye tracking, centration on the visual axis or corneal wavefront analysis, which documents each and every optical error generated on the anterior corneal surface, allowing a more customised and tissue-saving treatment.

In our experience, the patients are highly satisfied with the treatment results obtained with the SCHWIND AMARIS. Indeed they cannot compare their results with others - but the surgeon can. A  „complaint rate“ due to optical phenomena does not exist so far. That is remarkable. http://www.gutsehen.de/english/

Diego de Ortueta, MD, Aurelios Augenzentrum, Recklinghausen, Germany

What I very much appreciate about SCHWIND is that they are always realizing innovations that are clinically relevant and from which both the surgeon and the patient greatly profit. This result is also derived from the close co-operative work of the company with surgeons during the development process. In this way, the SCHWIND AMARIS Iaser is a high-tech product that fulfils the requirements of refractive surgery in an ideal way.

With the static and dynamic cyclotorsion control, optimal results are achieved for patients with astigmatism and with customized treatments. The online pachymetry provides me with more safety. The short ablation time and the highly-developed eyetracker enable stable ablation conditions during treatment. This ensures significantly lower deviations in deeper ablations. The choice to perform Aberration-Free and Customized treatment allows me to choose the solution for each and every case. It even saves tissue without clinically relevant reduction in quality. http://www.augenlaserzentrum.org/

Detlef Uthoff, MD, Bellevue Eye Clinic, Kiel, Germany

With the SCHWIND AMARIS laser we have employed the 6th eye laser in the Bellevue Eye Clinic since 1991. It differs in a number of technical improvements from its predecessors, also from those from other companies.  We use this laser since 2007 in daily ambulatory care. The many technical innovations, such as  dual fluence technology, 500 Hz repetition rate, five-dimensional eye tracking and online pachymetry are significant improvements. Our results with this laser are superb and distinguish themselves especially therewith, that in many cases a better uncorrected visual acuity after laser treatment compared to the preoperative best corrected visual acuity was observed.

The handling of this laser proves to be very well arranged and easy, and its concept is very user-friendly. The additional slit lamp makes it possible to recognize and rinse away even small particles in the interface. Due to the optimized ablation profile, this laser can be used in a tissue saving manner and therewith increases the indication spectrum. That up to now none of our patients has had a retreatment in well over 100 cases shows in summary that this is the best excimer laser that we have ever worked with. http://www.augenklinik-bellevue.de
