EASE

Epithelial All-femtosecond Surface Excision

EASE introduces a new era in refractive surgery by bringing the precision of femtosecond technology to a surface based approach.

EASE utilizes near-infrared femtosecond laser energy from the SCHWIND ATOS to create a lentoid-shaped refractive profile through the intact epithelium – eliminating the need for UV light or flap / cap creation.

EASE is the first surface-based, all-femtosecond refractive procedure.

Designed to simplify adoption while expanding the capabilities of the SCHWIND ATOS platform.

A new surgical concept

  • Innovative cap-free lentoid creation designed for a minimally invasive refractive procedure
  • Precise 360° edge incision technology enabling smooth lentoid separation
  • 3D graphic demonstrating refractive EASE treatment on eye (Epithelial All-femtosecond Surface Excision)

This cap-free lentoid approach allows optimization of the refractive profile while preventing the formation of a stromal interface resulting from cap or flap creation.

Why EASE matters for surgeons

Technological advantages

  • All-femtosecond workflow – no UV light required
  • Minimal energy load (approx. 50 % of KLEx)
  • Integrated eye-tracking and centration
  • Cyclotorsion compensation during docking with intact epithelium

Clinical handling

  • Easy learning curve with fast adoption
  • Lentoid removal via peel-off technique
  • Minimal need for stromal dissection (on demand)

Surgical efficiency

  • Short treatment time
  • Streamlined, single-platform workflow
  • Smooth integration into existing femto-based practices

Expanded indication range

EASE expands your refractive portfolio:

  • Ideal for thin corneas
  • Suitable for dry eye patients
  • Alternative for non-KLEx candidates

Patient-centric benefits

Optical quality

  • High predictability through precise laser-tissue interaction
  • Potentially reduced stromal roughness compared to KLEx
  • Accurate astigmatism correction via cyclotorsion control

Biomechanics & safety

Preserves more corneal biomechanical stability compared to intra-corneal procedures

Healing & recovery

  • Fast epithelial healing
  • Rapid visual recovery
  • Reduced inflammatory risk (no UV exposure)

Reduced risk profile

  • Lower likelihood of post-operative haze
  • Minimized stromal energy deposition
  • Less epithelial damage compared to standard PRK

Coming from KLEx, EASE is very fine going. I quickly adopted the procedure without major problems – even with extensive SmartSight NOVA experience. EASE represents a safe, precise, and effective approach.
